Warsaw, Poland https://neilmilton.scot/2026/08/far-right-versus-far-left/ https://neilmilton.scot/2026/08/far-right-versus-far-left/#respond Sun, 30 Aug 2026 21:29:40 +0000 https://neilmilton.scot/?p=5758 In 2025, before and following the election and presidential inauguration of former football hooligan Karol Nawrocki, the far-right of Poland organised several anti-immigration demonstrations which were met by antifascist counterprotests. Notably, on one occasion, in Warsaw, a gathering of several thousand, many wearing clothing associated with football hooliganism, meet at the Szymborska Passage in the centre of the city. Antifascist protesters unfurl a banner amid the far-right demonstration, causing temperatures to run high. Less than a kilometre away, an antifascist counterprotest comprising several left-wing groups takes place at the Dmowski roundabout. Later in the afternoon, the atmosphere turns febrile as the far-right groups approach the antifascist demonstration and bottles are thrown.

The visit symbolically marks the opening of a new phase in Budapest's relations with Europe. During the meeting the Prime Ministers discussed Magyar's victory in the recent Hungarian elections, the Polish-Hungarian relationship, and the issue of Zbigniew Ziobra and Marcin Romanowski - two Polish politicians evading prosecution in Poland by hiding in Hungary. After the meeting, Peter Magyar met with the Polish President, Karol Nawrocki.

The day before, Leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) and First Minister of Scotland John Swinney visits Hamilton in South Lanarkshire, the constituency of SNP candidate Alex Kerr, to kick off the final day of campaigning by meeting potential voters and owners of local businesses. Later that afternoon, he travels to Edinburgh where he addresses candidates and activists who campaigned across Scotland during the six-week parliamentary election campaign. In Scotland, counting of the votes takes place the day after the election, so on the morning of the 8th of May, candidates, volunteers, and guests gather at the Glasgow International Arena for the count process in the Glasgow region. Across Lanarkshire, candidates, volunteers, and guests gather at the Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility for the Scottish Parliamentary vote count process in the region of North Lanarkshire. After a decisive victory, on the 9th of May, John Swinney gathers the 58 newly-elected MSPs to Calton Hill in Edinburgh for a photo call with Edinburgh's historic skyline behind them. Two weeks before, on the 25th of April, the All Under One Banner group held a pre-election march through Glasgow to support the issue of Scottish independence.

On the eve of the general election, the political party Fidesz, headed by Viktor Orban, holds a rally at Budapest's Fisherman's Bastion square. Fidesz, which has been in power for 16 years, is trailing in the polls to TISZA, a party led by ex-Fidesz politician Peter Magyar. The next morning, on On the 12th April, polls open, and opposition leader Peter Magyar casts his vote in a school near his home. Afterwards, he speaks to the assembled international media before leaving. After 16 years of rule by the Fidesz party, his TISZA is ahead in the polls and looks set to change the government from Eurosceptic to one with closer ties to Brussels. In the evening, supporters of the Tisza political party gather at Batthyany Square to watch the election results come in. As the night progresses, it becomes clear that party president Peter Magyar has defeated the Fidesz party, winning a two-thirds majority in parliament, sweeping away the authoritarian era of Viktor Orban and heralding closer ties with the European Union.

After the meeting, the ministers speak to the press. Sikorski announces that Poland reaffirms its support for a two-state solution. In addition, both ministers point out the need for Palestinian representation in negotiations on the future of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Poland recognises the statehood of Palestine, and since 2005, the Palestinian Authority has been in the group of priority countries for Polish cooperation in development.

At the Parliament, the assembled crowds listen to the new president speak from the chamber, then march to the Castle Square where they watch a Holy Mass streamed live from the nearby Archcathedral.

The candidate nominated by the government, Warsaw's mayor, Rafal Trzaskowski, trailed Nawrocki by more than 369,000 votes. Prosecutors alleged that at some polling stations, the vote count was falsified to benefit Nawrocki, which has raised a popular movement for a recount nationwide. During the court session, two protests took place outside the Supreme Court building. One protest was led by Nawrocki's supporters who demanded the court ratify their candidate's victory, while the other, demanding a national recount, was led by the leader of the Women's Strike movement, Marta Lempart.

During a press conference, Tusk and Pichai announce the signing of a memorandum on cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence in sectors such as energy and cybersecurity. Donald Tusk believes this memorandum will enable greater investment opportunities for Google within Poland which will benefit national security. Pichai emphasized that this cooperation could contribute to an 8% growth in Poland’s GDP and highlighted Poland’s strategic role as Google’s largest engineering hub in Europe, employing over 2,000 people. The signatories of the letter are the Polish Development Fund (PFR), the National Cloud Operator (OChK) and Google Cloud.
